Accession is a piece that focuses on the gestural act of chewing gum within a specific institutional space (the MET Museum), establishing its place within the collection. A short film that exists as documentation.
It centers on creating a narrative of the gesture or action, presenting a metaphor for the possibilities of what could become a potential work of art, or what already is one. The artists understand the gesture as a transaction between Rirkrit Tiravanija and his reputation in the art world as an artist, and the ambiguous officialdom of art institutions, making everyone involved in the creation of the film part of the museum’s collection whenever it is shown.
